Exploring the Power of Journaling for Self-Care and Mental Wellness

Updated: Nov 19

You're nestled in your favourite spot, pen in hand, with the crisp pages of your journal waiting eagerly for your thoughts to dance across them. It's not just about jotting down your daily activities or venting about the latest stressors (though that can be quite cathartic too!). No, journaling as a form of self-care is like giving yourself a big, reassuring hug—a moment of mindfulness, reflection and acceptance.

15 minute write

Write a letter to yourself in the second person as if you’re writing to a friend

Be kind, be gentle

Consider the following:

  • What are the things you give yourself a hard time over?

  • How can you be kinder to yourself?

  • What have you done for yourself recently?

  • What are your body and mind telling you that you need more of?

Dear Self, thank you for being...

Dear Self, I am proud of you for...

Dear Self, I know things feel...

Dear Self, you are deserving of...

“You are imperfect, you are wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.”

Ancestors

Your ancestors did not survive

everything that nearly ended them

for you to shrink yourself

to make someone else

comfortable.

This sacrifice is your war cry, be

loud,

be everything and make them

proud.

Answering the what

Write 5 facts and 5 feelings that have either come up from the questions or more widely on how you are feeling or thinking today.

  • What did I do today that made a positive impact?

  • What did I find difficult today?

  • What situations allowed me to do my best work?

  • What did I get frustrated by today?

Make a feel good folder

  • It might be in your journal, a Pinterest board, a social media space or a computer folder

  • Create the space that works for you

  • Add screenshots, videos, quotes, images, colours, memories that make you feel good

  • Come back to this space when you need to lift your spirits

To sum up

Remember, journaling isn't just about putting words on paper—it's about honouring your emotions, acknowledging your journey, and nurturing your soul along the way. So whether you're scribbling down your dreams, doodling in the margins, or simply taking a moment to breathe, know that each stroke of the pen is a small act of kindness to yourself.
